The Los Angeles Fires: A Growing Threat in the Era of Climate Change

More than 200 wildfires have ravaged Los Angeles County since the first week of the new year 2025, scorching some 40,600 acres of land and 15,467 structures, as well as killing 27 people and displaced hundreds of thousands more. The largest two, the Palisades and the Eaton fires, are still active, with the Palisades fires only 59% contained. Losses are exacerbated by the fact that State Farm dropped around 1,600 homeowners in the Pacific Palisades, which make up around 70% of its customers, last year due to increasing risk.
